Makes sense. The frames can’t rot in the desert so the trucks are practically unkillable there.

They did issue a recall, my dad had one of the affected trucks. He sold it back to the dealer for much more than it was actually worth.

The full phrase is “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” It’s not a line from a movie or anything, it’s just an old expression meaning that when you are a non-local visiting a place you should do as the locals do. Every other combatant in the Middle East uses Toyota trucks, so they must work.

Ask away but I don’t remember the truck all too well. He sold it before I really started to get interested in cars.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Attributed to The Archbishop of Milan during the reign of the Roman Empire. Basically, it means do what the people do, in the place you’re at.

Shifter feel and was it an extended cab or regular cab?

Afghanistan is not in the ME doe. It’s in Asia. But yeah, Toyota loves sellin trucks to warlords.

Standard cab, short bed. No AC. It was the cheapest, barest version you could get. Thinking back I don’t recall the shift action feeling either good or bad, it was just a shifter. There wasn’t much slack though, it held up pretty well. My dad bought it because we had an old farmhouse with lots of property. He needed it for hauling wood and leaves and drywall and whatnot. I don’t recall it ever breaking down in the ten years he owned it.

Jeez, if they ever actually did want to fight on our soil like crazy people on Facebook keep saying that means F-150 sales would go even higher.

It was cheaper to buy Tacomas in the United States, outfit them for duty and ship them over.

I never saw our Special Ops guys using Tacomas- only Hilux diesels. I got to drive a couple of the more abused ones while I was in Afghanistan. It’s really impressive how inconspicuous they look, but how well armored they are. Bulletproof glass in the doors, thick steel plates for door cards, kevlar floor liners...

They also have up armored Land Cruisers and obviously they also have a shitload of Hiluxes. We had a turbo diesel crew cab five speed HiLux for running around base, loved that thing.

I’d imagine the suspension is pretty beat in those things.

Kinja'd!!!1

Indeed. But, while I was there, we had 4 shop trucks- a 2001 F250 5.4/5speed, a 2007 Suburban, a non-armored Hilux, and an F350 6.0 Powerstroke. The 6.0 PSD ran awful, but ran, the Suburban fell victim to the 5.3 displacement on demand oil consumption (it took 4 quarts to drive across base and back on its final voyage), the F250 was always broken for various reasons (though it was by far the most brutally beaten SOB I’ve ever seen), and the Hilux only had one failure- the alternator died after I tried to use the truck to revive a dead Optima from the crane. Keep in mind these trucks never got so much as an oil change and operated in very harsh conditions.

Yup, haha. If yall had a 7.3, it might have served you better. But I’ve still heard bad things.

Those Yota trucks are like cockroaches.
